There's been as much work done on the protocols as is doable without a significant user base. But there is no user base because hosting a social network costs money.
Sounds like what we need is a good cross-platform IMAP *client*, which can then be extended to take advantage of the protocol innovations.

Yes! All email client providers can now get a second life. Plus all the non-WhatsApp providers. Actually everyone outside the Walled Gardens. That should be quite a few. Users will get choice over what client(s) to use.
