There's been as much work done on the protocols as is doable without a significant user base. But there is no user base because hosting a social network costs money.
How many internet users use IMAP? On second thought I suppose it's normally there behind the webmail but not exposed. I mean, go for it, I wouldn't want to discourage, I run a dovecot server myself... but it looks like a long shot.

"Social Media" today means video sharing. Hosting that requires a revenue base of some kind.

What market? There is no market for social media service.

Oh *that's* where the "50% of email accounts" are hiding -- ISP mail accounts that nobody uses. OK, ISPs could host a chat service extended from their mail service.
-
Haha, no, they actually still get used, but usually by "older" folks >50

Those are work accounts, surely? Personal accounts that people would use socially are overwhelmingly webmail, I thought. Or do you have research that says different?
-
From our paying customers (Telcos, Hosters) we know those figures. Many people now use Webmail *and* IMAP thanks to their mobile phones, no matter if they are businesses or consumers. Most growth is in IMAP. That's why
@gmail and the likes still provide it. -
That's interesting. What put me off IMAP is that I have huge mail folders and I want to browse them but not copy to multiple devices, and the clients I tried couldn't do that (I don't think it's the fault of the protocol or server).
-
Sounds like what we need is a good cross-platform IMAP *client*, which can then be extended to take advantage of the protocol innovations.
-
Yes! All email client providers can now get a second life. Plus all the non-WhatsApp providers. Actually everyone outside the Walled Gardens. That should be quite a few. Users will get choice over what client(s) to use.
