Can someone explain the meltdown/spectre issue to me as if I was a small child or a moderately smart dog
"Spectre" is a completely new class of software vulnerability that affects most software running on any modern hardware. We need new tools to fix it (which don't yet exist), and then vast amounts of software will need changes.

Basically, today we write software that says, "don't do this unless (...)". We now need to write, "don't even *think* about doing this unless (...)", because today the CPU does think about doing it, before it decides not to.

Except that today there's no way to even tell it that, so it has to be added to CPUs and programming languages as a feature.
