...wall-mounted is probably <5% of market, and it's 3X price of regular ceiling-mount ones. I'll be a good consumer and replace every 10.

Yeah but I'm thinking bigger; an appeal to "good old days" thinking w/very solid-feeling consumer appliances, no gewgaws, art deco styling.

Consumers aren't buying that because they want it; they're being paid to take it. Will take a few years to show them what a bad deal it is.
