generators I figure a handy guy can keep one running for DECADES, and build a wood gasifier to power it.

you'd probably get better efficiency running a steam engine on the wood directly though

I like this idea a LOT.

yeah; internal combustion for electricity only makes sense for rapidly varying loads - use steam for base load generation

Reciprocating steam engine is easy tech...but turbine is more efficient.

Could even go direct to gas turbine from wood gas...but maintenance (dirty, high temps etc)

steam is sounding like a really good idea - keep the dirt OUTSIDE the moving parts

Hm...stockpile diesel, or bunker fuel? Wood's renewable but slowly. How many joules can you harvest off your land, vs. liters of diesel?

harvest 1 cord / acre / yr sustainably 24 million BTUs per cord = 72,000 kw hr 50% efficiency (?) = 36,000 kw hr house = 3x per month

so you need 36 wooded acres to run a steam engine to give a house 2017 levels of electricity, in perpetuity could prob cut elec usage 50%

Can waste heat from power generation heat the house in winter?
