I didn't realise that the last group of male adults to get the vote only got it in 1918 (e.g. servants, people living with their parents)

Yes, the period of actual democracy in Britain matches very closely to the period of disastrously bad government.

I think it's a bit more complicated than that. We had almost no democracy in this country in 1815, but we had the terrible Corn Laws.
