...although May promised "Brexit means Brexit" she actually campaigned for Remain. Cameron resigned because he backed Remain.

Yes, I think it has to specifically be a vote of no confidence in the government. Which might be a bit extreme

They can't just vote "We think the government is OK but we believe the electorate should have the chance to decide".

Now maybe, they would go ahead and vote no confidence as a formality, like taking the Chiltern Hundreds, but it's wiggle room.

You could argue that calling an election now, with Labour in chaos, is exactly what the new law was supposed to prevent.

you could also imagine anti-Corbyn Labour MP's (i.e. nearly all of them) voting against a no confidence motion on that basis.
