Never mind "tragedy". Was Osama Bin Laden's death a terrible mistake? Did it directly lead to, or at least permit, the rise of IS?

Hunkered down in Pakistan, Bin Laden was a much diminished threat, but his charisma kept him as the figurehead of global jihad.

Once he was dead, with the uncharismatic Zawahiri in charge of Al Q, the group lost much of its appeal, leaving a vacuum which enabled IS.
