English towns used to have "working men's clubs". Factory workers could afford to support a space for themselves. Groups like the Quakers set up their own churches. In today's economy, they've now become a property management business, with a few odd beliefs on the side.

This is bad for multiple reasons too. Some people can’t afford to pay but a lot of people are unwilling to speculate, so if you try to charge admission you’re automatically reducing potential local recruitment
