Can someone please explain to me how a plastic straw that I throw into a bin in London and gets sent to a landfill or incinerator in Kent somehow ends up in the sea? Is this anti-plastic hysteria really as witless as it seems?

It won't reliably make it to a landfill: it could be "recycled", which often means being sent to China to be dumped in the sea.https://www.theguardian.com/society/2004/sep/20/environment.china …

Why would they buy plastic to dump it in the sea? That article says they're recycling it.

They want some of it, don't want others. The sorting is the expensive bit, so they ship it all over and then sort it. If 96% gets recycled, 3% landfilled, and 1% dumped in the sea, that's still a lot of straws.
