Do sequels often suck because the success of the first was luck, or is there something about the nature of sequels that pulls them toward suck?

The Matrix is a particularly good target for a reboot. You can't say it wasn't great, and you can't say it couldn't be improved on. Same directors and cast... well, theatre companies probably improve their productions as they go.

the thing is, though - are they trying to make them better, or just save money by cheaply exploiting an original work that a new crop of kids (of various ages) haven't seen?
