Do sequels often suck because the success of the first was luck, or is there something about the nature of sequels that pulls them toward suck?

I mean it seriously, I'd like to see a lot more remakes. If something was good, even only 5 or 6 years ago, try to make it better. Most of Shakespeare's plays were remakes.

Remake Casablanca. Remake The Godfather. Remake Toy Story. Stick as close to or stray as far from the base as you want. Tell the best story. Originality is overrated.

The Matrix is a particularly good target for a reboot. You can't say it wasn't great, and you can't say it couldn't be improved on. Same directors and cast... well, theatre companies probably improve their productions as they go.

Agreed that extending a story rarely works; what I think makes the difference, be it either sequel or remake, is creating a different genre of film with those characters or story. The best sequels are different movies entirely- sadly we don’t see this enough with remakes.

The best sequels are different movies entirely -- yes.
