I'm in South Africa worried about two little girls and their family. @Noor_and_Alaa have been posting their lived reality in #EastGhouta their mother told me just hours ago they're not sure if they'll live to see another day. How best can we help them and others?

Annie, firstly, let me tell you that I have the deepest sympathy for Ghouta. But, respectfully, I think your article lacks a bit of understanding of international politics, and the specific role of UN. It has no coercive power, and all its power stems from its member states.

The UN, without the political backing of its members states, is an empty shell. Would it decide to start acting politically, without state backing, it would be putting itself in a very difficult position (especially, in the most contentious issue of our times, Syria).
