“I’ve spent my entire military career trying to save lives, and every flag draped coffin that passes feels like a personal failure. …. I tried so hard to not let them down, but I do, because war is cruel and doctors are not omnipotent.”

And one last photo that my phone accidentally took and summarizes how I feel…. Inspired by the next generation and looking forward to the future, supported by the knowledge from our institutions, and by the freedom of our great country; wearing art from home and in motion.

For 90 years, we’ve been connecting small towns across Alaska, including Juneau, home of Native artist Crystal Worl, who dreamed of having Indigenized salmon on a plane. Today, that dream became a reality with the X̱áat Ḵwáani (Salmon People) aircraft. bit.ly/3pB82VK

In my view, this panel did focus on the heart of the problem, which is the translation between healthcare and public health. Beyond just timely data reporting, sentinel surveillance sites, ACOs as action arms, transparency back to healthcare. But how to fund PH sustainably?

Next, panelists @celinegounder, @Farzad_MD, & @annezinkmd consider the biggest challenges facing America’s health and what steps health care agencies can take to address them. #DukeMargolisPolicyConf

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, especially my mom, who taught me courage, strength and the importance of finding your own way in life. The 4th female OBGYN in Coloroado, the 5th woman to climb Mt. Logan, and a devoted mom who approaches life with poetry and love. 🥰

Thank you to every Alaskan who found strength, resilience, support, and hope with the time that was given them. You found solutions through the fog of uncertainty and fear. I am so grateful to each of you. 10/10

“I wish it need not have happened in my time,’ said Frodo. ‘So do I,’ said Gandalf, ‘and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.’ ” ― J.R.R. Tolkien 9/10

How we build connection, agree to disagree, find common ground, support our kids and our futures and work to improve the health and wellness of every Alaskan will determine our next 100 years and prepare us not only for the next pandemic, but for the daily work that must be done

Together we strove toward the mission of the Department of Health - to promote the health, wellbeing and self-sufficiency of every Alaskan. However, our work is not done. I truly believe how we recover from this pandemic will be as important as how we responded. 7/10

Together, we grew hospital capacity, provided protection to health care workers, empowered communities to be healthy, learned, grew and continued to respond as new information was available. 6/10

But Alaskans don't wait for others to solve our challenges; Alaskans showed up for the climb. We made our own testing infrastructure, from manufacturing swabs to the National Guard helping report the results, and we led the nation in testing per capita. 4/10

We were predicted to be one of the hardest-hit states. To add to this, we had no commercial testing capacity and limited health care access -- and the challenges quickly mounted as airlines, shipping and trucking all became limited. 3/10

For so many, this has been impossibly hard; people have lost loved ones, lost business, community, milestones, and connections. We grieve those losses. Mistakes were made, lessons learned. But as hard and long as it has been, Alaskans rose to the challenge. 2/10

It’s not easy to find time for #prevention, and not everyone has access to care, but your future could depend on it. Talk to your primary care provider or public health center as most insurances cover recommended #health screenings and many free services exist.

Gunalchéesh, Háw’aa to everyone who joined us at the Alaska State Capitol for a rally for our Missing & Murdered Indigenous People. It’s so important for us to come together as a community to mourn our missing and murdered loved ones, bring awareness and call for justice.
