Langston Hughes was the first black literary writer I’d ever been assigned. It was high school, and his very short poem, “A Dream Deferred,” but it made me realize something was out there that I didn’t know. I checked out several of his short story books. I didn’t read Sula until I was 21 — not sure I was mature enough in high school to deeply understand it. Going to order your book — very into the subject because my own research takes place in nearby counties (Liberty and McIntosh). Have read the contemporaneous accounts.
