I think you are misreading what causes what. People were extremists before facebook. Some accounts on facebook have validated what they beliefs already were. know from my own family. They were horrilbe people to start but didn't have an outlet until far right populism came along

One problem with this argument: even if SM disappears tomorrow, the division will remain. This is just the symptom, we need to ask why there is such a demand for misinformation
I think it reinforces already existing difference, that is, sure, there were division before, but by identifying the most radical ppl and feeling them information validating them and repeating it makes ppl more and more radical.
