Finding somewhere to live at the moment is a challenge. But BBC journalist, Ellis Palmer, says finding somewhere to live when you are disabled is “something of a nightmare”.

He says it's difficult to find properties that are accessible for disabled people, with things such as a step-free bathroom.

Habinteg Housing Association, a social housing provider, claim just 9% of English homes offer even the most basic of accessibility features.

“I’m saddened but not surprised by that stat,” says Ellis.

He says cities are particularly hard to find accessible accommodation but rural areas often have more properties that may have been adapted for the needs of older residents, which can be similar to those of disabled people.

Ellis says one of the barriers he found was, despite new flats being built and advertised as adaptable, they still came with baths and showers which disabled people would have to adapt at their own expense.

"You'd need a budget of £20,000 to £30,000 to adapt it for you to live in," he says.

Another barrier is that many flats are only available to students or people over a certain age.

“When I spent five months in the pandemic working at 5 Live, I thought I'd hit the jackpot," Ellis says, "I found a nice room to rent in Salford, a decent price, and not too far from the office."

“But unfortunately, despite it being perfect for me, it was only available for students.”
