With respect, no. Title IX is broken. Our criminal justice system even more so. They have different outcomes, standards of evidence, and obstacles. Using one does not preclude using the other. Survivors should choose what will serve them best--both, one, or neither.

While I encourage survivors to come forward and seek consequences for those responsible, experiencing harassment does not *obligate* one to take any further steps, especially ones with risks and costs; you've already been imposed upon. If you do speak up, we are in your debt.

I'm not denying Title IX has flaws. But in many cases it may make more sense or be safer than going to police. There's been a fair bit on this from the women who kicked off our current anti-campus-harassment push--see msnbc.com/msnbc/campus-r and knowyourix.org/issues/schools.
