I’m so honored to take over as president of NAJA, which has been such an important part of my life and career. And I’m thrilled that it’s because of how much we are expanding as an organization. Wado to our members and the rest of the board for believing in me.

Today Biden designated Avi Kwa Ame a national monument at ~500,000 acres, protecting it from solar and wind development, and included tribal co-stewardship in the proclamation.

An amicus brief that’s firmly grounded in Diné bi beehaz’áanii, or traditional Diné worldviews and Navajo law, provides more context for the Navajo Nation water rights case that came before SCOTUS today.

Highly recommend giving it a read yourself — it's very accessible & a thoughtful blend of legal, historical & cultural writing that serves as a good reminder that treaties are living documents, with through-lines from time of signing (and before) to today. sct.narf.org/documents/ariz

If the Supreme Court rules that the Indian Child Welfare Act is unconstitutional, the law will once again be aligned with the same conservative Christian interests that tore apart Native nations, cultures and families in the first place.

The outstanding question ahead of the Brackeen hearings is not whether SCOTUS will strike down #ICWA but how far they will go — at the furthest reaches it would open the door for every federal law concerning Native peoples and nations to be challenged.

To my mind, the far more interesting question is why don’t other #SCOTUS justices approach issues of Native people and American colonialism with empathy and expertise? Liberal and conservative alike struggle. Gorsuch is not a savior; he simply shows us what competence looks like. twitter.com/imillhiser/sta

Hard to overstate what a radical step this would be, given that many swing-state legislatures are gerrymandered in ways that self-perpetuate GOP control. Would decimate checks and balances.
