Up to 300 ships have been stopped by Russian forces from departing the Black Sea, leaving one of the key global trade routes for grain virtually blocked. Countries like Yemen may be tilted into full blown famine.

Stalin's phrase for "national traitors" was "enemies of the people". Internal enemies are very handy: if anything is not going as planned, you just need to find & execute a scapegoat. Miraculously, other Russians will (a) believe that, (b) enthusiastically look for more 'enemies'

Good🇺🇦news: even a rumour of 🇷🇺 asking for help from🇨🇳contributed to Chinese stocks prices dropping significantly. Hopefully all possible helpers will conclude it's not worth it. Also: I've learned more about economics in the past 2 weeks than in college🤦

Update: the official reason for blocking 's apps is that it allows 🇺🇦 users a hate speech exception wrt 🇷🇺 "liberators". Not sure I've seen a platform to clearly designate the aggressor before! That makes Facebook an "extremist" entity for 🇷🇺. /53

Update: so far seems like Russia only disconnected itself from the biggest platforms: Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram. I see LinkedIn also mentioned, but not sure if this is a new measure or smth from years back when they refused to use Russian servers. /52

Is there some God Complex in Tech competition going on? Transliterated version: "I hereby challenge Vladimir Putin to single combat. Stakes are Ukraine". Even as a joke, this is kinda telling.

Fun fact: Eastern Europe has been ringing bells wrt 🇷🇺 for years, but the West didn't take it seriously. I can see why: the 🇷🇺 modus operandi is so alien, it's tough to believe such twisted logic even exists. But things are pretty clear now, right??? /3

Another inherent Western assumption is that every leader values at least their own citizens' lives. Again, Putin doesn't. He knows now that 🇺🇦 is badass, but he built a system that will just force him to be back in a few years - only better armed & informed this time :( /2

A thread👇 on why calls to 'de-escalation' & giving Putin a face-saving exit is a Very Bad Idea. He WILL be back, and not just to Ukraine. Such calls are based on the assumption that Putin, like Western leaders, prioritizes well-being of his country. He just doesn't. /1

Sanctions won't work, argues , unless Western governments end anonymity in shell companies, trusts, real estate - and demand basic anti-money-laundering checks for lawyers, art gallerists, auction-house managers:

I hate being a prophet :( After I wrote this thread, I saw that UK news yesterday evening also started discussing food. Again: Putin is starving Ukrainians in Mariupol now. He can starve Africa & Middle East next. This IS a world war. And US chickened out wrt the Polish jets 😡

I see more and more US headlines about rising gas prices. Humans are generally bad at focusing on short-term vs long-term issues, but this time we just *have* to get it together! Dear Americans: whenever you see the "is it our problem?" mood, please keep explaining the above. /4

Russia itself exports a lot of wheat (🌍18% in 2019). Ukraine would get that to 25%. That's a lot of countries in Africa, Asia, Middle East to blackmail with starvation (blamed on the West, of course)! Not to mention Ukraine's 🌍16% corn production. /3
