The funnest part of product/copywriting no one tells you about is when you have to take an old, much-amended-over time email, or another transactional piece of writing, and scrape away layer after layer, trying to work out what specific problem each iteration was trying to solve.

THIS. Organizational politics OR frequent user confusion that someone has tried to "fix" through copy rather than a redesigned flow OR an incident that some collection of letters is meant to ward off happening again.https://twitter.com/usefulkarl/status/1245401323488632833 …

It’s basically archeology for organisational politics.

Anyway, if someone asks you to rewrite something that has clearly been written and rewritten all the time, ALWAYS take time to scrape off all the layers, because they’re each trying to do a job. AND it’s fun*! *for a very niche definition of “fun”.

This feels like a super meta tweet describing it's own idiosyncraticty. Oh you, with your compound sentences and hyphens. It would be fun if your original draft of this was 5 words long :)

Interesting insight! There’s likely a product idea in there where each edit requires a reason behind the change (like git, but for writers), which would help future editors valuable time.
