The goal of the project was to explore women’s experiences within the #geoengineering community to illuminate the barriers, if any, that women are facing to participation in discussions about #geoengineering and its #governance. 2/

The project sought to give voice to women’s perspectives & experiences with geoengineering epistemology & academic pursuits in order to better understand, from their perspectives, the opportunities or limitations they received to intervene in geoengineering gov discourse. 3/

The major consensus was that women felt that men were more likely to display aggressive behaviour during geoengineering conversations. This led to the majority of women expressing a silencing effect. 4/

Only one woman reported the ability to speak up to allow herself to finish a sentence. Furthermore, women not only avoided speaking during these types of interactions but also actively sought not to socialise or work with particular individuals. 5/

It is also apparent that current efforts to increase women’s participation are not sufficient. Namely, the use of tokenism, while benefiting some women, may actually decrease diversity rather than increase it. 6/

Women expressed frustration with having to speak on general topics not within their scope of interest or expertise and were frustrated by the lack of effort to obtain more appropriate speakers on those topics. Also, there desperately needs to be more rep from the global South 7/

A major convergence in this research was whether or not women thought they brought a unique perspective to the geoengineering governance table. Women tended not to want to bring an essentialist discourse into the interview and shied away from making such arguments. 8/

Instead, a narrative of women offering better facilitation emerged. Women concluded that having more women at the table would lead to a diversity of views being heard. More research is needed on whether or not women do have new & novel perspectives to bring the geo table. 9/

Now this is me editorialising - women experience barriers in many academic fields, and in this sense
#geoengineering may not be significantly worse (more research required). 10/Prikaži ovu nit -
However,
#geoengineering involves large uncertainties, value disputes & political controversies, & .: a wider spectrum voices, backgrounds, & experiences is required to capture the full range of research questions, risk perspectives, gov perspectives etc 11/Prikaži ovu nit -
This was a very involved project for a full-time JD student - Kayla Ueland deserves significant credit for taking this study on. The results haven't been published yet, so I'm reporting this based on her findings (mostly quoted verbatim from her research paper).
