I've tried doing more passive things after a certain time like watching television or gaming. That seems to help a lot. Until I see something that ignites some radical new idea that makes me stay up until 2am anyway. Which is often. So...um...nevermind. I don't have an answer.

Books are great for this! Reading in bed is naturally self-limiting, you'll eventually just pass out and drop your book on the floor

Actively factoring in the hours of sleep I'm about to get, or won't get if I stay up, helps a lot.

Yep I've considered adding "If you go to bed now, you'll get get 7 hours of sleep" reminders to my phone to see if that helps...

I work in "stopping points," which is absolute hell for time management, but pretty good for this problem! Finishing discrete tasks is also rewarding, so you get a little dopamine boost for the transition too

Omg. The guilt trick. This is usually the only thing that works for me. The only problem is remembering to even do this in time, and not suddenly realise it at 2 am...
