One of the reasons there's a stereotype of #ADHD being a “boys” thing is bc generally girls/women’s symptoms tend to manifest inwardly & often don’t “affect” others. As a result, faaar fewer girls get diagnosed as children, thus needlessly suffering in silence their whole lives.

similar disparities along racial lines, with black boys much more likely to get an Oppositional Defiant Disorder diagnosis than ADHD I didn't learn I had ADHD until I was in my late 20s
-
Yep, that makes total sense. There's soooo much to be said about social conditioning and how it makes it harder for people to get diagnosed properly. And I can only imagine it gets harder and harder to get diagnosed the more intersections you have.

I learned recently another reason is that most ADHD research (if not all) was done on boys until early 2000s(!!) Meaning, that a lot of girls went undetected because the knowledge of their symptoms wasn't there hence why so many of us gets diagnosed now later in life.
-
And by learned, I mean I was told by someone who had read the study claiming the I haven't read it myself

Legit. I'm going through the diagnosis process now and they are constantly saying "ooh that sounds rough but unfortunately you handle these symptoms so well that we probably shouldn't diagnose you, since you don't seem to need help" and I'm like I JUST WANT SOME HELP
-
I'm really thankful for women being open about their ADHD lately. Otherwise, I would likely never have even considered that I might have it too - the symptoms are so different from the stereotype. However I probably wouldn't get help either because of all the coping mechanisms

It sucks! And I know you can get diagnosed later in life (I was), but that doesn’t make up for the years that could have been spent developing study habits and other strategies to help w/ symptoms. Where could all these late-diagnosed women be if they’d had more of a head start?
-
This was exactly my thought (and my great sadness) when I was diagnosed. I got this far & achieved all these things on my own, while struggling silently. Imagine how much more I could have done, or how much less I could've struggled, if I'd just been diagnosed from the start?

My daughter has been diagnosed with it but never offered medication. She does get extra support at school though.
