Something I find interesting with some of the CV-advice discussions I've seen on Twitter is how different CV conventions are from country to country. Things like CV length, using a photo or not, including references or not, etc etc. What are the conventions like in your country?

True, Country, industry, type of job, it changes a lot. I probably reviewed 200+ CVs is the past 7 years, and the ones I found most fascinating are from South America, they get really creative there, also Cover Letters are not a worldwide thing, I surprised with that :)

Yeah, I don't like cover letters tbh. They're just lip-service about how much you want the job and how talented you are - as if that wasn't clear enough already: You're applying for the job, and here's your CV. Everything you say in a cover letter should already be in your CV.

Yup! I never used a cover letter myself, for the exact same reasons :)

I think cover letters are useful since it shows more personality, especially with juniors it’s often unfair to judge people on just their cv.

Yeah I agree that for entry level roles where you may not have as much CV or folio experience, a cover letter is definitely useful to justify your application and separate you from "the masses" applying for the same role.
