Cover letters for me are purely about written comms skills. More important than ever to validate that a candidate can express themselves concisely and clearly in a remote environment. Written communication is key to working asynchronously!

Content of a cover letter should be purely matching experience to requirements - not lip service or repeating the CV.

But this should already be covered by the CV imo

Potentially, but more often than not it isn't. CV is usually generic, cover letter is tailored. As a HM I need to connect dots of experience to requirements. If you do that for me then you're more in control.

Sure, this also might change depending on experience vs what you're applying for too. ie: if your past 5 roles ever a decade have been "Position X" and you're applying for "Position X" you see how it can feel a bit silly to have to connect the dots for someone else.

It can feel a bit silly but on the other end the HM is having to connect the dots for potentially 100s of candidates, why not make it easier for them to accept/reject. Not saying it should be mandatory, but imo it increases your chances of success (with me, anyway).

That's fair, I can't argue with that.

Although I'm a bit more militant on cover letters for entry level/grad positions

I forget where I saw this but I read someone making a good point that for lower level positions cover letters are a great substitute for previous formal line-item positions, and I so think that is a solid sentiment.

There's that, and there's also the sheer volume of competition you're going up against for those roles. You *have* to differentiate yourself as much as possible.

Totally agreed on entry level roles where you need to shine to be noticed. But letters can also be a be a source of unconscious bias against people who don't speak English natively. If their CV & folio interests you, an interview will demonstrate their ability to communicate!
