This is how a series about wrestling I'm writing for fun ended up becoming mix-matched wrestling. The wrestling is over the top, with powers and technology, so why not?

Love it. And for the challenge to hold true - I what happens if every referee, judge, spectator, manager, tech-expert, mechanic, etc (ie all the characters whose gender isn't crucial and who we almost always see as men) is a woman too?

I've started constructing characters by their motivations and goals, then throwing a random generator in there to mess with a few things and define other elements, such as gender. This allows me to work with the new information to make new characters/conflicts I wasn't expecting.

That sounds like a really fun way to write and likely creates some very interesting characters! One little bit of unsolicited advice (that you might be doing already) would be to chat to people from each demographic to ensure that you're avoiding caricatures :)
