I know at least two people at my current job who almost didn't apply, despite meeting the requirements, thought of that study, thought "what would a mediocre white dude do" and applied - and got the job.

Yep, I'm one of those people too! I would never ever ever have applied for the EA job that started my career in games if it wasn't for the guy who literally couldn't understand why. So, exasperated and stubborn, I applied. ...got the job.

This is extremely surprising to me. I've been in a job application frenzy lately and I only look at the requirements as a complement to the job description. I didn't think anyone was ever fully qualified to take a job.
-
Yep. So many of the guys I've spoken to say the same thing; they just apply for any jobs they think sound interesting, regardless of their own qualifications. Women don't do this. At all. And I'm not saying everyone should apply for everything; the ideal is somewhere in between.

As someone who's applied for jobs where the only qualification I had was that I had a pulse, I just assumed everyone followed my mother's advice: "Apply! The worst they can do is say 'no.'"

Yep! My fiance's older brother told me this once, hearts ago. I couldn't believe it. (He is 10 years older and from memory was already a manager at the time) "Ellen, if you match 100% of the requirements, you're overqualified."
-
Totally this. Job descriptions are written aspirationally - they're spreading the net far & wide to try catch as many people as possible, but nobody is going to match up to everything. Those unicorns don't exist. Just apply for the damn job.

One of my fav factoids to tell ppl about.
..and I have managed to change some job requirements/ads with it in mind... (No data on if that part worked but, one can hope)Dziękujemy. Twitter skorzysta z tych informacji, aby Twoja oś czasu bardziej Ci odpowiadała. CofnijCofnij

I don’t think I’ve ever 100% matched a job I’ve applied for, and I don’t think I’ve ever interviewed or hired someone who was a 100% match for a role. Sometimes someone has a skill you hadn’t thought of that is more useful than one you listed in the spec.
