Why is it important to bring up all these issues at work instead of... I don’t know, doing the work? They hired you, you sound qualified, why is it so hard to concentrate on your job during working hours and do your activism afterwards?

Everything I mentioned is something demanded of us. Educating others, interviews, glue work. It's all expected of us, so I don't think calling it "activism" is just. Building a safe, fair culture is EVERYONE'S job. So the more relevant question is, why aren't others pitching in?

I’m going to have to say I don’t know what glue work is. I would call it activism when your primary focus is weeding out thought crime more than doing the job of programming. There is nothing wrong with coming in, nose to the grindstone, not causing trouble, and going home.

Man it would be IDEAL if folks could focus on the work without also dealing with harassment, abuse or other hostile treatment for being different - but that's just not the way most workplaces are right now. Change requires work, and that work is everyone's responsibility.

Yeah I'd absolutely LOVE to live in a world where I didn't have to copious amounts of daily emotional labour, and get to "just do my job". It must be so nice to never have to deal with harassment & discrimination at one's workplace... But yeah, that's literally what privilege is.
