I honestly cannot emphasise this enough... I would hire somebody who is 'pretty good in terms of technique, but good at communicating and shows a desire to learn & grow' a MILLION times over the 'superbly talented asshole'. Don't be that guy. Nobody likes that guy.https://twitter.com/JeanLeggett/status/1257433245102284801 …

That's just a nice way to spin "We don't really want to hire someone who is qualified and therefor more expensive. So as long as you're willing to kiss ass and play the hierarchical game we'll give a shot at training you." Then end up with >50% unqualified staff making mistakes.

I am happy to hire brilliant experienced team players, but I don't hire brilliant assholes. Not for any ass-kissing reasons but simply because one toxic individual can plummet the wellbeing and productivity of an entire team. There is plenty of research to back this. Not worth it

Totally agreed. The two are not mutually exclusive. One I'm happier to be more lenient on, as hard skills can be taught. The other I refuse to compromise on. Having to rehire new ppl because they leave as a result of toxic jerks on the team is far more expensive long-term!
