"Shows a desire to learn" is great if there is someone to teach them. If not you have a different set of challenges. Hiring the right people is an art, just like being good at most jobs. Problem is the people doing the hiring are frequently going off a checklist.

Training newcomers & recruitment are two different jobs done by different people :) Agreed though, there def needs to be proper training & good mentors. And yep, all companies ought to invest in recruiters that know how to actively source talent, not just skim the received CVs!
