I just realised the article is from 2016. I looked up his conviction & it turns out he ended up only getting 2 yrs (apparently the max possible sentence) - but which was still 1 year more than 1 of the rapists & on par with the other.

I actually think it's relatively simple. There have been so many other cases like this... Society punishes threatening authority more than it does destroying women's lives. It's not just juvenile crimes - similar stories happen all the time for adult rapists too. Less than 1% of rapes even lead to a conviction to begin with. This is why so many rapes continue to go unreported; the trauma of it all is simply not worth it.
