My ex would come looking for praise whenever he'd done laundry or cleaned smth. Apparently I was a bitch when I was unimpressed & told him that yeah, he SHOULD be doing those things, since he's an adult & he also lives here...

Think of it like a training exercise. Recognising desired behaviour reinforces & it encourages more of it while slapping down no matter what creates withdrawal & insubordination. It works with dogs and horses but you have to have one that's trainable . Seems to work with men too.
I can totally appreciate this in theory (and I agree, I def didn't slap down on him) but adult men are not comparable to animals here. They're capable of the same intelligent thought process as women. If I, an adult, can figure out our laundry needs to be done, so can he...

My husband now does all the housework and I’ve noticed with some things, they’re simple to me now but once took time to learn. His learning started recently. A lot of men give up because women tell them they’re doing it wrong, get frustrated and take over the task again.

I do see your point Anna. But i think to some extent it is conditioning. A lot of men are still reared to see their mother working doing domestic work and assume that's how it is. It's up to mothers to make it clear that isn't how it is. Not blaming mothers here! I'm a mother!
