I dread the situation where it is faulty and turns green causing someone to walk into traffic. We assume users will look up to verify its safe but we all know users don't always act like we'd assume. Edge cases aren't usually life or death, but this gives me anxiety.

That's a concern for any green light anywhere though regardless of where it is, isn't it? Having the line of sight away from traffic is definitely riskier, agreed, but combined w/ the unmissable sound that come with green, hopefully people will be v aware of when it's ok to walk!
