I use to be like this. I forced myself to do it if I wanted to see my friends and have a good time at TwitchCon16. I was MISERABLE leading up to the plane ride. Questioned if the misery was worth the trip and tried to talk myself out of going. Glad I didn't. Had a blast.
My friend is terrified of flying. I tried to be helpful by explaining that flying is the 2nd safest mode of transport (1st being elevators) and that she has more of a risk of dying from the food onboard than in an accident (true story). Yeah using rational arguments to combat irrational fears usually don't work that great :) However, what might help is trying to figure out what it is about the situation that makes people anxious, trying to address those issues and work on a way to increase the feeling of safety
