Reminds me of Bastøy Prison, where they just put prisoners on an island and are encouraged to just contribute to a tiny society consisting of other prisoners. It is apparently more sustainable than standard prison as there isn't near as many guards and they have their own farm.
Yeah, the US prison system is notoriously horrific. And the discrimination that leads to the demographics within it doesn't help either. Totally agree with everything you said.
