Omg same! I grew up playing games as a kid too but refused to call myself a gamer until late in my twenties because I'd learnt as a kid that that was a title just for boys... I wish somebody had taught me when I was younger that they want the case!
Can't imagine feeling the need to hide liking games... 
We had girls in our crew who were gamers, geeks, skaters - sharing interests is lit!
So lame, these pressures we feel to conform. Glad you got free.
