Nah, it's because 'male' is assumed by a lot of people to be the default gender when referring to gamers. Women who play games (i.e. half the population, or something) are seen as a divergence from the norm and so require a modifier for clarity. It's ridiculous.
Or "female programmer", eugh.
I'm a "nonbinary programmer" That means, none of my programs deal with binaries. NONE.
I remember the same thingy when Women were allowed to all sections of German Army. mostly all ranks are male specific. So at the beginning it was a weird addressing of a person. "Miss Captain" = "Frau Hauptmann"
Oh wow, I never considered how that'd work with languages that have gendered words! I imagine they've sorted it out since, yeah?
