I wonder what I could do in a situation like this. While my presence may deter a creep, it could also add to the woman's stress if a large stranger walks up and starts chatting with them. How to message the difference between being an ally and being a pick-up creep.
As a guy, you can always just step in and ask the woman if the guy is making her feel uncomfortable, for example. If you simply ask if she's ok, odds are she'll probably say she's fine even if she isn't. But if you ask something about the guy, she might be receptive to help.
