So, real talk. Is #MIGW healthy? A thread:
I'll start by saying I'm so grateful for all the opportunities I've enjoyed during #MIGW18. I've also been talking to a lot of people about how incredibly crunchy the week is.

So many people have suffered mentally and emotionally, several even to the point of physical illnesses and injuries caused directly by the stress and anxiety leading up to Games Week. I'm talking hospitalisations. 2/7

How can we find a way to celebrate our industry without also feeding into our huge problems with crunch culture and drinking culture? We even had multiple talks and panels at
#GCAP18 and#PAXAUS18 about crunch, and about how we need to grow up as an industry. 3/71 odpowiedź 0 podanych dalej 35 polubionychPokaż ten wątek -
Yet we do this to ourselves every year. 4/7

A few people I spoke to tried to explain it as 'we have to cram it all into a week because we have interstate and international visitors who can't afford to take more time out.' 5/7

I would argue that the Australian film industry has similar requirements, and yet hosts multiple events (both industry and consumer facing) in multiple states across the year. There must be a way we can spread this stuff out so people don't FOMO themselves into oblivion. 6/7

Such an important conversation! I for one suffered a huge burnout due to MIGW prep, and suspect I'll have a long recovery... More spread out events would be good, I think? Tagging in

I think it’s mainly a cost-efficiency thing, yeah. I couldn’t really afford to do two weeks in another city for a more spread-out series of events, not two single weeks or three long weekends. One way or another you’ll miss some events, and that’s ok. Gotta change the mentality.

It sucks though that we have to sacrifice events that we'd want to support, purely because we need one evening to sleep/breathe. Also too many evenings have multiple overlapping events all in one night... It's not physically possible, even for those who don't take an evening off.

We had three team members in Melbourne from the Tuesday, and we still couldn't get to everything. It's not just bad for attendees, it's asking media to choose between events as well.
