What are some of the most frustrating UX experiences you've encountered while trying to start playing a new game? Conversely, what part of the onboarding experience do you think games generally tend do better than apps?

Games feed you hints that the user almost never notices but uses indirectly to help them through a sequence. Apps rarely help show you what you need when. Lets do an example:

For instance if im looking for a specific photo and the app can tell ive been scrolling for x amount of time the app doesn't try to assist me in a with a search, or a tag system or a by month or by date.

Meanhwile in a game if i needed an item it would hint at me either where to find it, or how to use it, or where in my inventory where to look. Often times you dont even realize you were fed an objective.

Now imagine an a photo app that could within a few behavioral flowcharts of asking what is the user trying to do or find, aka scrowling, aka looking at photos with x person, and then proffer the image they are looking for? Zing. UX at its finest.

Absolutely. Good UX ought to be completely intuitive and unnoticeable. It's the help that you didn't know you needed, but are happy for when it appears.
