What are some of the most frustrating UX experiences you've encountered while trying to start playing a new game? Conversely, what part of the onboarding experience do you think games generally tend do better than apps?

Games feed you hints that the user almost never notices but uses indirectly to help them through a sequence. Apps rarely help show you what you need when. Lets do an example:

For instance if im looking for a specific photo and the app can tell ive been scrolling for x amount of time the app doesn't try to assist me in a with a search, or a tag system or a by month or by date.

Meanhwile in a game if i needed an item it would hint at me either where to find it, or how to use it, or where in my inventory where to look. Often times you dont even realize you were fed an objective.

Yep, totally. I've noticed variations of this in racing games a lot, ever since I started on NFS. Indications of where to align yourself on the road, anticipating turns/obstacles, how to speed up/slow down, etc. So much "invisible" UI & guidance without ever having a *tutorial*.
