What are some of the most frustrating UX experiences you've encountered while trying to start playing a new game? Conversely, what part of the onboarding experience do you think games generally tend do better than apps?

It's sort of duh but games can have a much easier path to connecting with they user on an emotional level, and users retain lessons learned better when there is this sort of bond.

just thinking about this today - portal 2 onboarding. It's purposefully confusing and backwards because it assumes players have had previous experiences - which is the biggest problem for games. Not accommodating to people who may be picking up a controller for the first time.

Far Point in VR assumes you know how to aim and use the custom controller and hardly had any intro. Lots of VR experiences drop the ball on onboarding.

Games do a better job of teaching over time. Apps try to smash it all up front and assume you retain all that knowledge no matter how long it takes for you to return. Games have more skills to teach, and games with good ux stretch this teaching out over time.

For sure. In games the 'tutorial' is often extended step by step as you reach certain milestones, where apps really do slam you with everything at once!
