Alternately, expect interest payment on the "loan" that we've given to the university?

8/7 My bank charges interest on loans, as do most institutions that process financial transactions where someone has the use of someone else's money for a period of time. I suspect that the university will not pay us interest on our £40-50 one month loans to them.

The difference between the emergency tax and the tax you should have paid will be given back through next month's pay. For many people it will be around £40-50. 7/7

So if you calculate your pre-tax daily rate, multiply it by 3, and then multiply the result by 0.6, that should be the amount that is appearing in your account as a refund. 6/7

This is because (apparently) in cases like this, HR uses an "emergency tax rate" that is applied to those days of pay, and that rate is likely to be higher than your usual tax rate. The emergency tax rate is 40%. 5/7

If you tried to compensate for this by taking your December pay slip (for example) net pay amount (after tax), multiplying by 12 for the yearly, and dividing by 365 for the daily, you'll find that 3 days at this rate is NOT what has been paid into your account. Keep reading. 4/7

If you calculate your daily pay rate by taking your salary and dividing by 365 (or otherwise as appropriate for part time or fixed term), you have to remember that this is pre-tax money, and that you would usually in fact pay tax on all of it. 3/7

The deposit in your bank may be called something like SA19PERCENT10 rather than "University of Manchester" or whatever your pay deposits are usually called. 2/7

A thread of some math-y and otherwise info for members about the pay stuff. This is for people who had 8 days deducted from January payslips and are getting a refund of 3 days along with the pay. 1/7

So... UoM Humanities colleagues... given the recent reversion to using UEQs in promotions, which we had been told would be stopped, how are people handling the requests to publicize the evaluations and remind students to fill them out? (Programme and course unit directors...)

Manchester Uni VC claims "virtually all" fixed-term contracts are research staff. In 2017/18 (most recent available HESA data) Manchester Uni had: - 2,470 academic staff on fixed-term contracts (out of 5,120 = 48%) /1 1/2
