I also acknowledge that this stereotype hurts white male autistics, savants or otherwise, as well, as they have to prove intelligence /masculinity to be accepted/have value. It just seems to me that there has to be more to autism than this 'type' and we can help each other.

And I mean WE in every possible way - not only women autistics; all the many different ways of being autistic and NOT white male savant autistics. And then there is the task of breaking down barriers between relatively more and less 'enabled' forms of neurodivergence.

Ourselves rather than tokens of a type that is being reproduced to serve the existing hierarchies. I know there are other, more eloquent voices than mine already doing this, but I hope we will become legion.

When it is equated with having a male brain is equivalent to saying we autistic women can only be intelligent if we are not women / not empathising / not autistic. This impacts me personally and limits the way I can ‘be’ in public spaces. What could change is that we will be

The autism = cognative empathy (‘mindreading’) deficits view is taken as meaning we can’t have any empathy, when the reverse of this is often true, including in the realm of ‘feeling’ for others. I also think the hyper-systematising view of autism#

I’m wondering if we’ll see any more High profile openly autistic women ‘coming out’ during my lifetime. I really hope so. I understand the fear that leads to not disclosing. Especially when the empathy deficit stereotype dominates. I think it hurts us in two ways.#

What exactly is a ‘boyish face’? A large part of this is surely about aesthetic judgements (both by researcher and in partner selection). Also, if true, how is this helpful? Surely it’s risking turning us (once again) into a spectacle.

I fought hard for my diagnosis, because I've been asking for help for things that would always get met with disdain since I was 5. Hearing someone call me "high functioning" carries some concern with me, because it's usually associated with the belief that I don't need the help.

Beautiful. “As British MEPs arrived in the European parliament in Brussels this morning, they were greeted by a sign above the chamber could be seen reading: “It’s not goodbye, it’s au revoir.” ”

CFP: How can academics and artists challenge able-mindedness and ableism in their fields? Can academia lead the way in inclusive design? Has accessibility been co opted by equality and diversity rankings? How do we become better neurodiversity allies?

Sadly structural ableism is not widely understood on the British left, where many tend to routinely challenge specifics such as cuts made to disability benefits yet then go on say to things like "I would rather die than be disabled" right in front of us.

This article describes a situation that is - if terrifying - helpful to know about. The threat to our environment is not 'humanity' but a group of humans who use disinformation to serve their own ends

I’ve read statistics about high unemployment rates among autistic people. Are they true for us here? Are you currently:
