This intro video about it from 1986 is just so retro and cool:

02/02/2020 is the only date in our lifetimes — and the 1st since 11/11/1111 — to be palindromic across the World, in whatever date format you choose.

The code, data, and preprint for CALICO is out: Calibration of Asynchronous Camera Networks. W/ & . 1) does not depend on common fields of view or synch, 2) allows for low-cost systems for reconstruction. 1/n

A figure to represent cameras and a calibration object; pyramids are cameras. Left: ground truth, Right: computed result with our method.

Infrastructure work can be tiring and demanding but it is very important to do so that interesting questions can be asked or answered. Apollo astronaut armstrong had a very funny way to put it.

Interesting looking work that is inspired by Minkowski space () which treats space-time as a single entity. It is also open source.

Quaternions and Euler angles are discontinuous and difficult for neural networks to learn. They show 3D rotations have continuous representations in 5D and 6D, which are more suitable for learning. i.e. regress two vectors and apply Graham-Schmidt (GS).

Oldies but goldies: James Kajiya, The rendering equation, 1986. Describe conservation of light as an integral equation which is at the heart of global rendering technics such as radiosity.

Hot take: Mathiness [1] is like an adversarial patch [2] for ML conference reviewers: Mathiness causes a reviewer to classify the paper as "accept" regardless of whether the math is useful/valid and the paper is any good. [3] Fig. 6 has some empirical evidence of this. (refs ⬇️)

It still amazes me that someone came up with such a crazy way of landing a space shuttle. This is a nice insightful and hilarious video explaining how they used to land a space shuttle.
