We released a primer on privilege at @FemFreq last week and this is a perfect albeit horrifying example. Can you rent an Airbnb without worrying the cops will be called on you? https://www-m.cnn.com/2018/05/07/us/airbnb-police-called-trnd/index.html …

The other part of the above story that pisses me off is this: “A police sergeant showed up... and said he didn't know what Airbnb was.” The continued lack of law enforcement at large not understanding the internet and how it impacts and interacts with our daily lives.

Online harassment targets do not go to law enforcement for support for a million justifiable reasons and one of them is how we are dismissed and ridiculed because cops don’t know what Twitter is or why we’d be scared when our address is posted with rape and death threats.

Couple that basic gaslighting & ignorance about internet basics with the brutality & aggression that communities of colour and trans folks face everyday by police. Reporting abuse to the cops is not an option for so many people because it’s less safe then the threats themselves.

So if your intersections of privilege grants you the freedom to never have to worry or think about these things then what are you doing to change the system so we can all be afforded that privilege?

First, white people, stop fucking calling the cops on people of colour!

But maybe that’s not you, then what? Can you throw money at organizations trying to end police brutality or online harassment? Can you volunteer or offer other kids of support? Can you amplify the voices of people who are doing critical social justice work?

Change happens because we demand it. Because we collectively organize and make it happen. Social progress is not just inevitable, as many folks are finally realizing the past couple years. So do something tangible and concrete and be in this struggle for the long term.

Again, it's a matter of the reliability and reputation of the rider. Even then, in the case of asking to be picked up by someone else in THEIR car so you don't have to pay cab fare, the risk is there. A sort of give and take relationship
