Can you get into an Uber or Lyft and be fairly certain the driver will not attempt to trap you in the car and assault you?

The other part of the above story that pisses me off is this: “A police sergeant showed up... and said he didn't know what Airbnb was.” The continued lack of law enforcement at large not understanding the internet and how it impacts and interacts with our daily lives.

Online harassment targets do not go to law enforcement for support for a million justifiable reasons and one of them is how we are dismissed and ridiculed because cops don’t know what Twitter is or why we’d be scared when our address is posted with rape and death threats.

Couple that basic gaslighting & ignorance about internet basics with the brutality & aggression that communities of colour and trans folks face everyday by police. Reporting abuse to the cops is not an option for so many people because it’s less safe then the threats themselves.

So if your intersections of privilege grants you the freedom to never have to worry or think about these things then what are you doing to change the system so we can all be afforded that privilege?

First, white people, stop fucking calling the cops on people of colour!

But maybe that’s not you, then what? Can you throw money at organizations trying to end police brutality or online harassment? Can you volunteer or offer other kids of support? Can you amplify the voices of people who are doing critical social justice work?

Change happens because we demand it. Because we collectively organize and make it happen. Social progress is not just inevitable, as many folks are finally realizing the past couple years. So do something tangible and concrete and be in this struggle for the long term.

Isn't this an example of the *opposite* of privilege? Of discrimination?
-
The word privilege, as she is using it, basically means not having to live your life in the anticipation that anyone you interact with may suddenly decide to discriminate against you. Why do you think WOC always have receipts for everything? Their word isn't believed
-
Yes. But the example used here is of people being seemingly being discriminated against. It's an example of the absence of privilege.
-
I realize, of course, the example may be helpful in illustrating the concept of privilege. But, as privilege is a tricky enough concept (they just released a video trying to explain what it is), I think it's best to try to be precise.
-
Privilege is that you never rented an Airbnb and worried about encountering racism. We know what discrimination on this scale looks like. Watch their video, and stop missing the point

Depends on if the person lending their place is reliable and is there. The story you provided seems to be the fault of the lender for not providing these guests some assurances from the neighborhood to a degree

This is not an example of privilege. This is an example of bigotry. Calling out privilege is meaningless - unless you're out for vengeance or seeking pity.
