Because the novel is an awful work that celebrates pop culture gatekeeping and says that only those works created by and for white men really matter.https://www.vox.com/culture/2018/3/26/17148350/ready-player-one-book-backlash-controversy-gamergate-explained …

Um. Like, everywhere? It's the whole damn book. Read the Vox piece for more.

So you are going to let something like that prevent you from enjoying the movie? That’s just silly.

Um. This shit is toxic. It does material harm to people's lives. I'm still going to see the movie but the cultural impact of this messaging throughout pop culture has to be part of the conversation.

I read the article. The movie is about a boy trying to find the Easter egg to gain control of the Oasis. That’s the basic premise of the movie. He is trying to find this macguffin. I don’t see your point.

I mean unfortunately I can't enter some digital realm where I prove I'm the coolest person in the world by quoting every line from Monty Python and the Holy Grail so just seeing the movie of RPO will have to do.

Is it really that bad? I've got my hands on the novel, planned to read it to learn what not to do as a writer, but it seems it might be physically painful to read. Might giving up on that in order to read better novels.

I also highly recommend reading Laura Hudson's review of Cline's follow-up, Armada, as she brilliantly pinpoints just what makes these books so empty and terrible.http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/books/2015/07/armada_by_ernest_cline_follow_up_to_ready_player_one_reviewed.html …
