Been binging @godlessnetflix while sick and even tho its very securely a western, it’s clearly (at least) trying to make space for women and black folks. But it leads me to the following question: does any ‘serious’ western movie or show NOT include rape?

Overall, and with caveats, I actually enjoyed Godless, but throughout the show I was regularly reminded of this quote I've used before, "in the game of patriarchy, women aren't the opposing team, they are the ball." Especially at the end, yes, even given how the end plays out.

But isn't violence in general used to do that? Isn't it an accurate representation of these gritty, harsh environments? It's definitely a trope, but I don't see the problem with it. It has an inherent message of "this is horrible"

this is the one where she infamously misrepresented Hitman, surrendering any claim to credibility

omg the hitman one, where beating up the dancers is actively discouraged?

I find it jarring that violence against women is frequently portrayed for some sort of srs media cred. But is consistently portrayed in a way that says nothing.

If anything its always some variant on the same tired takes: all men are violent abusers (and theres no way to stop them), wommz are too delicate for man world, some men are just super special evil

Well, in fairness, that IS a pretty gritty, terrible, and lawless thing to do. Even in otherwise overwhelmingly lawFUL places, it's still not completely eliminated.
